Summer is the season for fireworks. Read on as your trusted eye center, Viewpoint Vision Care, shares four tips for protecting your eyes when engaging in fireworks-related activities.
1. Fireworks Are Better Left to the Pros
We suggest attending public fireworks shows instead of buying your own fireworks. When doing so, make sure to keep a safe distance of at least 500 feet from where the fireworks are being lighted. Professional pyrotechnicians possess the requisite knowledge and skills about how to safely handle different types of fireworks and firecrackers.
2. Wear Proper Protective Eyewear
Even if you’re just a spectator, you should wear protective eyeglasses made with polycarbonate material. They are highly impact-resistant and durable, giving you comprehensive eye care and protection.
3. Be Mindful When Handling Sparklers and “Duds”
Sparklers’ temperatures can go as high as 2, 000 degrees, putting you at risk of sustaining eye burns or injuries. In addition, keep in mind that “dud” fireworks may still explode after a few minutes, so make sure to pour water on them before cleaning them up. Don’t forget to wash your hands afterward to remove gunpowder traces, which may cause eye irritations.
4. Seek Immediate Medical Attention If Injured
Refrain from rubbing, rinsing, or applying any pressure on your affected eye. Avoid applying or taking medications on your own because they may contain substances that could worsen the trauma. Your expert eye doctor will have to perform a comprehensive eye exam to determine the most appropriate treatment for your situation.
