With summer upon us, your kids will want to be spending their days playing outside. Unfortunately, this time of the year brings stronger and harsher ultraviolet (UV) rays, putting your kids’ visual health at risk. Read on as Viewpoint Vision Care, your provider of high-quality eye services, shares some key tips on how to protect your children’s delicate eyes this summer:
Help Them Apply Sunscreen
UVB rays are linked to skin and eye sunburns. Since your children have thinner and more sensitive skin, especially around their eyes, they are more susceptible to sunburns. Help your child thoroughly apply sunscreen on all exposed skin, paying careful attention to the area around the eyes. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and using a UV-protective umbrella can also help.
Remind Them to Wear Sunglasses Whenever Going Outdoors
UVA rays can cause ocular changes, particularly to children whose eyes are more vulnerable because they’re still developing. All children should wear sunglasses whenever spending time outside. We can help you choose a pair that provides 100% UV coverage. We may suggest choosing polycarbonate, oversized sunglasses with wraparound frames for your enhanced protection. If your child wears eye glasses, we can also upgrade their lenses to UV-protective ones.
Make Sure They Drink Lots of Water
The warm weather combined with your children’s increased physical activity can make them sweat more easily, increasing their risk of dehydration. Make sure your children stay hydrated this summer!
Most importantly, don’t forget to schedule an eye exam for your child before school resumes. If your child wears eyeglasses or contact lenses, we can make sure their prescription is still accurate. Even if they don’t need corrective eyewear, it’s still a good idea to have their eyes checked regularly, especially before the school year begins.
